A spokeswoman for North Tyneside Council said: "There are a small number of North American ruddy ducks at Swallow pond, Rising Sun country park.
The story goes back to Sir Peter Scott, the great conservationist, who introduced three pairs of ruddy ducks to his Slimbridge reserve in Gloucestershire more than 50 years ago.
North Lanarkshire Council have granted permission for a cull of ruddy ducks at two lochs in Coatbridge.
