David Hess apparently thought the same thing, and carried on in his quest to find a more suitable solution than the rug beater.
It was enough just to spend a night in a TV-less, wire-less place whose walls are full of stories - I'll save the ghost one for Halloween - and decorated with antique rug beaters, hay knives and stud muzzlers.
Rugs were taken outside once or twice a year, hung on clotheslines, and hit with rug beaters to remove the dirt.
