On this date, during his helicopter insertion for a reconnaissance and time sensitive targeting close air support mission, Sergeant Chapman's aircraft came under heavy machine gun fire and received a direct hit from a rocket grenade which caused a United States Navy sea-air-land team member to fall from the aircraft.
Other uses include explosive ordnance disposal, ground support equipment and sea-air-land team functions, as well as damage control equipment like pumps and emergency generators.
An HH-46 Sea Knight made an en route stop for refueling before continuing on to a landing zone, flying at 50 to 200 feet above ground level, to pick up some sea-air-land team members.
