Based on long-term studies of two such areas, a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), shows that animal communities on the abyssal seafloor are affected in a variety of ways by climate change.
The overall themes are surficial seafloor mapping and characterization, source-to-sink sedimentation, physical oceanography and sediment transport, earthquake and tsunami hazards, coastal aquifers, and contamination and biological implications of earth science studies in the Southern California Bight.
The clock is now ticking for it to restart -- but fears about a nearby seafloor faultline and a string of fires inside the dormant facility have deepened distrust in local communities.
