It was reported by newspapers in 1992 that an Irish aid agency had persuaded Donegal seed potato producers to donate a percentage of their annual produce to African farmers.
The sprouted seed potato should be buried in about 15cm (6ins) of compost at the bottom of the container, with any sprouts being fully buried in the first instance.
He said: "Current seed potato production in Britain is based in the Scottish Highlands, but there's no reason why it can't be done here.
