That branch of applied mathematics that determines, by observation and measurement, the exact positions of points and the figures and areas of large portions of the moon's surface, or the shape and size of the moon.

Selenodesy, the study of the Moon's shape, was bolstered by the Lunar Prospector and Clementine missions in the 1990s and is currently being greatly improved by Japan's recently deployed lunar orbiting triad of Kaguya, Curia, and Okina (S&T December 2007, page 17).
