A hydrolytic enzyme that removes sialic acid from mucoproteins and is found chiefly in microorganisms of the respiratory and intestinal tracts.

The test detects elevated vaginal fluid sialidase, an enzyme produced by the bacterial pathogens associated specifically with bacterial vaginosis.
Some evidence has shown that Asian skullcap contains component which inhibit the enzyme sialidase.
