A limbless lizard (Anguis fragilis) of Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa, having a smooth snakelike body and feeding chiefly on slugs. Also called blindworm.

In common with other species of lizard, the slowworm is able to shed its tail as a defence response to help escape from predators by providing a distraction.
