The landing of a space vehicle on a celestial body or on Earth in such a way as to prevent damage or destruction of the vehicle.

Red Sox fans know the difference between soft landings and hard ones and need look no further back than last season to remember a very hard one.
As things have turned out, there was the softest of soft landings and it was over so quickly that if you blinked, you would have missed it.
Given historical experience, soft landings would seem to be the exception rather than the rule.
