Loud sounds above 70 dB are electronically compressed to safe, comfortable levels, while lower sounds are stereophonically amplified to normal levels.
I also remember Costello's voice stereophonically cannoning off the Menzies building.
This segment was an experimental setup by John Pfeiffer, one of many such experiments, as he honed in on what to do and what not to do when recording stereophonically.
