5 Kyodo (EDS: UPDATING WITH COMMENTS) Japan switched to a digital share system Monday, the first trading day of 2009, without major glitches as paper stock certificates of all exchange-listed companies converted into electronic data to boost time and cost efficiency as well as shareholder security.
When a shareholder in a cooperative sells his unit, yet cannot locate the stock certificate and/or lease, the typical procedure is to ask him to sign a lost stock affidavit, which states that he misplaced the documents and that no lender has an interest in the unit.
