1. See snowbell.
2. An aromatic resin obtained from the snowbell. Also called styrax.
3. A brownish aromatic resin used in perfume and medicine and obtained from any of several trees of the genus Liquidambar, especially L. orientalis, of Turkey. Also called styrax.

[Middle English, from Latin, alteration of styrax, from Greek sturax, perhaps of Semitic origin; see rw in Semitic roots.]

1. (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Plants) any of numerous styracaceous trees or shrubs of the genus Styrax, of tropical and subtropical regions, having drooping showy white flowers
2. (Chemistry / Elements & Compounds) a vanilla-scented solid resin obtained from one of these trees, Styrax officinalis of the Mediterranean region and SW Asia, formerly used as incense and in perfumery and medicine
3. (Chemistry / Elements & Compounds) a liquid aromatic balsam obtained from liquidambar trees, esp Liquidambar orientalis of SW Asia, and used in perfumery and medicine
