Funding for the studentship is being provided by the Natural England Environment Research Council which funds science that increases the public's understanding of the natural world.
A spokesman for regional development agency One North East explains: "The North East Studentship provides full or partial funding for study at Masters or PhD level at one of the five universities in North East England combined with work-based placements at companies in the region.
The North East Studentship (NESt) funds postgraduate students to work with companies on projects while they are studying at one of the region's universities.
