According to the Environmental Justice Foundation, two thirds of the world's cotton is grown in developing countries where farmers are paid only subsistence wages.
With no natural resources, the standard of living has gone from subsistence wages to one of the highest in the world in just a few decades.
At the bottom of the pile is an army of labourers and domestic workers, mostly Asian or African, often paid subsistence wages and living a life far removed from mainstream retail.
