A line sharing a common point with a curve or surface and being the closest linear approximation of the curve or surface at that point.

D represents a large distance between a tangent line drawn to a pair of convexities from which an opening of the concavity is defined and a bottom of the concavity measured in a direction at right angles to the tangent line.
The tangent lines will resemble a fishbone which is what this process is frequently called.
This is the basis for Considere's construction method, usually applied to a maximum that corresponds to the existence of a first tangent line from the origin to the [[sigma].
