It was comprised of stainless-steel replaceable blades locked into an aluminum ferrule behind a deep-penetrating Trocar tip.
Also, the problem of blades flying open during flight is non-existent thanks to an inertia driven, trocar style tip that requires impact and pressure to force the tip shaft down into the ferrule, thereby deploying the blades.
It is simply placed by piercing the tympanic membrane with the trocar tip.
