The rotation occurs due to interactions between the updraught of the plume and horizontal wind patterns.
The updraught created by the flames' heat conducted the sewer gases up a hollow column and over three or four lit mantles where they were purified before being released into the atmosphere.
Once a fire starts, the heat attracts an updraught, and the hotter the fire gets the more oxygen-rich air is sucked through the deck to feed it.
