2. Mathematics To become zero. Used of a function or variable.

[Middle English vanisshen, alteration of Old French esvanir, esvaniss-, from Vulgar Latin *exvanre, alteration of Latin vnscere : -, ex-, ex- + vnscere, to vanish (from vnus, empty; see eu- in Indo-European roots).]
