In doing so he analyzes sports' relationship to Durkheim's take on religion, integration and social order, on Weber's notions an meaning and rationalization, on Marxist assertions about work, alienation and ideology, on cultural studies' accounts of hegemony theory, on race and gender in terms of acceptance and intolerance, on topophilia, on Elias's concept of figurations, Bourdieu's ideas about symbolism and violence, on postmodern virtualism, and the globalization of sports.
Trans- and consubstantiation, Calvinist virtualism -- these are as inadequate as their scholastic predecessors in addressing the mystery behind Jesus's words of institution.
Even Ridley's extreme virtualism stops short of Calvin's mature thought in lodging the communication of Christ's power in spirit and faith with merely derivative attention to the object, yet the difference between them is finally slight -- more a matter of reference and emphasis, focus and rhetoric, and certainly not of substantial or bodily presence on Calvin's part.
