The freight train, owned by DB Schenker, was being used to transfer coal from the Ffos y Fran opencast washery at Cwmbargoed to Aberthaw via Nelson and Ystrad Mynach.
Meanwhile, clearing-up operations continue at Ellington Colliery and the nearby Lynemouth washery in preparation for their ultimate demise later this year.
When Lynemouth and Ellington pits were combined, coal from Ellington was brought to the surface through the Bewick Drift and taken on an overland conveyor belt system to Lynemouth pit washery where it was prepared for burning in the adjoining Alcan aluminium smelter power station.
