n. In both senses also called monkshood, wolfsbane.
1. Any of various, usually poisonous perennial herbs of the genus Aconitum, having tuberous roots, palmately lobed leaves, blue or white flowers with large hoodlike upper sepals, and an aggregate of follicles.
2. The dried leaves and roots of some of these plants, which yield a poisonous alkaloid that was formerly used medicinally.

As the plants do not normally reach any higher than about 200 mm (8"), the clumps can be planted alongside other shade loving plants such Primroses, Snowdrops, Erythroniums, Wild Garlic, Hellebores, Trilliums and Winter Aconites to get the full spring display.
officinalis Icterina, a gold variegated type, keeps its fresh looking yellow leaves all year, particularly when grown in a sheltered spot, and makes a good background for early bulbs such as winter aconites.
Daffodils, grape hyacinths, all of the flowering onions (Alliums), dogtooth violets (Erythronium), glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa), winter aconites (Eranthis), snowdrops Galanthus), scillas (Scilla), Grecian windflowers (Anemone), Guinea Hen flowers (Fritillaria), and wood hyacinths (Hyacinthoides) are seldom eaten by pests.
