In the research, boffins found that female zebra finches never tried to play out of their league and happened to choose low-quality males rather than their superior competitors.
Neil Metcalfe of Glasgow University, who led the research, compared the resting metabolic rates of zebra finches fed on a regular protein diet as they grew with birds switched from a low- to a high-protein diet halfway through their growth period.
His entire collection was stolen including 40 budgies, 40 Java Sparrows, 50 Diamond Doves, 70 Zebra Finches, 70 Bengalise Finches and one Marked Love Bird.
