On both fronts--HPA and SGA--Orbite is applying (or would apply) its unique, hydrochloric acid process for alumina fabrication, which creates no toxic waste and also allows for extraction of valuable rare earths and rare metals such as gallium, scandium and magnesium, which are in demand for things like solar cells and electronics.
As the production method with its sulfuric acid process has few alternatives, the homogenization phenomenon is very severe in the domestic market.

Although in this work in the slag-metal system nickel is absent, general principles of chrome distribution between the metal and the slag, depending upon activity of silicon in the metal and different basicity of slag, is of interest for acid process of ferronickel refining as well.
By acquiring DSM, SABIC gained one key technology - Stamicarbon - to add to three processes it has developed: the Acetic Acid process created at its Research & Technology (R&T) unit; Alpha-Sablin, developed jointly with Linde of Germany; and a new venyl acetate monomer process, to be used at its semi-commercial acetic acid plant at Yanbu' to start up in 2004.
