(ăd′ĭs ăb′ə-bə, ä′dĭs ä′bə-bä′) The capital and largest city of Ethiopia, in the center of the country on a plateau more than 2,440 m (8,000 ft) above sea level. Captured by the Italians in 1936 and made the capital of Italian East Africa, it was retaken by the Allies in 1941 and returned to Ethiopian sovereignty.
