Anthem has a revealing publishing history: conceived as a play in or before 1920, when Alissa Rosenbaum was a young teenager, it was written as a novelette in the summer of 1937, published in that version in England the next year by Cassell and Company, and then revised heavily for its 1946 American publication by Leonard Read of Pamphleteers, "a small conservative outfit in Los Angeles that published nonfiction essays" (Peikoff x).
While admitting there is no other evidence supporting Rand's recollection, he later concludes: "By another 'accident' of historical circumstance, young Alissa Rosenbaum had been among the very last students taught by Lossky in his native homeland.
