(ä-yĕn′dĕ gō′sĕns), Salvador 1908-1973. Chilean politician who as president (1970-1973) was considered the first democratically elected Marxist head of government. He died, either by suicide or murder, when his government was overthrown in a coup d'état led by Augusto Pinochet.
