Also included are such possible sources as byzantine ivories, reliefs on Roman clay lamps and, most intriguingly of all, an example of the Roman Arretine ware that Vasari claimed as a source for rilievo schiacciato.
For her palette, Swanson makes a mainstay of a warm, reddish orange that closely resembles the colour of Roman Arretine wares, but in many of her pieces she also incorporates white or black terra sigillata, the latter of which can be produced from the former through saggar firing.
