It's true: There is a real bonito in Florida waters, one whose common name, Atlantic bonito, is recognized by the International Game Fish Association, National Marine Fisheries Service, Kells & Carpenter's Field Guide, and other authorities.
A study was conducted to characterize 30 autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of three fish species; Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus), European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus) and Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda), on the basis of phenotypic characters.
Popular choices, depending on the time of year, include anchovy (hamsi), sea bass (levrek), bluefish (lE-fer), gilt-head bream (cipura), turbot (kalkan) and Atlantic bonito (palamut).
The Atlantic Bonito tuna, which has been nicknamed "Trefor" after being caught off the village of the same name, is normally found in the Mediterranean and as far afield as Mexico.
