The termination of BIFFEX was mainly due to low liquidity (Koekebakker and Adland 2004) caused by the poor hedging performance of BIFFEX contracts (Dalheim 2002; Haigh and Holt 2002; Kavussanos and Visvikis 2006; Kavussanos and Nomikos 2000).
Even though BIFFEX ceased to trade in 2002 due to low liquidity, the hedging function of freight derivatives contracts is regarded positively by many in this industry.
Finally, investigation of this issue has important implications for the purposes of futures trading, as the BIFFEX contract was eventually delisted in April 2002.
This led to the creation, on May 1, 1985, of the BIFFEX contract.
