Basic-rate interface (BRI) ISDN consists of two 64 Kbps B-channels (bearer channels) that carry the user's voice, data, image, and sound traffic in both directions and one 16 Kbps D-channel (data channel) that carries the call set-up and signaling information.
For standard high-speed data transmission, a BRI connection is sufficient, offering two B (or bearer channels) to carry the data at 64 kbps per line, or 128 kbps for both, and one 16 kbps D channel to control and signal for the transmission of the data on the B channels.
In ISDN systems, 64 Kbps circuit-switched bearer channels (B channels) carry both voice and data.
