This study was performed to access the effectiveness of Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) in patients with type II respiratory failure secondary to Post tuberculosis pulmonary sequelae and also to identify the factors that can predict the success rate with the hope that this will improve management of the disease.
These patients were applied BiPAP through endotracheal tube and its response on blood gases and neurological status was evaluated.
She was extubated 24 hours later to heliox (80% helium/20% oxygen) delivered with BiPAP for postextubation stridor.
"Because it helps make use of the BiPAP machine much easier, her daily life is not being affected as much."
Given the need for rapid patient monitoring and support and that the intervention was likely to be brief, it was considered safer and more efficient to transport the BiPAP machine from the paediatric intensive care unit to the patient, rather than transport the patient to the unit.
METHODS: Asthmatic patients presenting with AAE (PEFR % predicted < 60%) at the emergency unit were randomised to ST, ST and CPAP or ST and BiPAP. Groups presented similar baseline characteristics.
BiPAP features separately adjustable inspiratory and expiratory pressures, making expiration more comfortable for such patients.
These include: (a) CPAP - continuous positive airway pressure, (b) IPPB - intermittent positive pressure breathing, and (c) BiPAP - bilevel positive airway pressure.
