Originated mainly from South and Central America, wild relatives of guava include Brazilian guava (Psidium guineense), Mountain guava (Psidium montanum), Strawberry or Cherry guava (Psidium cattleianum), Pineapple guava (Acca sellowiana) and Chilean guava (Ugni myricoides).
Despite these expressive production levels, the presence of pest insects compromises the health of Brazilian guava crops and is a major obstruction to guava commercialisation, both in the domestic and international markets.
