Microbial community plays a role in feed digestion through fermentation and recycling of microbial protein through caecotrophy. The in vitro gas production technique has been used to evaluate the nutritive value of feed in caecal fermenters; it also provides information about kinetics and fermentation characteristics of feedstuff and diets, and is a useful indicator of caecal microbial activity (STANCO et al., 2003).
Fiber also provides an energy-rich substrate for the intestinal microbiota, which supplies the rabbit with additional energy coming from volatile fatty acids and with high-quality microbial protein recycled through caecotrophy (GIDENNE et al., 2010).
This might not be unconnected to the highest feed conversion observed in this study among the rabbits placed on the floor system, which simulates the natural conditions and encourage caecotrophy that it practiced at night and in burrows during the day (Fielding, 1991).
