A region of southern Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inhabited in ancient times by Italic tribes, Greek colonists, Etruscans, and Samnites, it was conquered by Rome in the fourth century bc. Campania joined Italy in 1861 as part of the kingdom of Naples.
