A borough of southern Pennsylvania southwest of Harrisburg. It was burned by the Confederate cavalry in July 1864 after the townspeople refused to pay an indemnity of $100,000 in gold.

I find it almost amusing that the article fails to mention the Confederate General McCausland, who demanded a huge amount in gold for not burning Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. When the town refused to pay the ransom, the Confederates burned it.
