The Cladonia rangiferina species of reindeer lichen is noticeably grey in color and often has a combed look with all the branch tips going in the same direction.
This variation is attributed to factors having negative effects on seed germination, seedling establishment, growth, and survival: missing or insufficient microsite facilitation; uprooting by frost-heave; competition for light, nutrients, and moisture with the dwarf-shrub vegetation; or allelopathic effects of the associated dwarf shrubs (Empetrum hermaphroditum) and lichens (in particular, Cladonia stellaris, Cladonia arbuscula, and Cladonia rangiferina; Nilsson et al., 1993).
For these animals, lichens are "famine foods." By contrast, the lichen known as reindeer moss (Cladonia rangiferina) is a dietary staple for reindeer and caribou.
