In Lyon's papers he discovered a Latin description that was not in Lyon's handwriting of a plant called "Lyonia." Macbride sent a copy to Stephen Elliott with the query, "What plant is this?" Although known today as Cliftonia monophylla, who had attempted to name it "Lyonia?" Among the possible authors were John Abbot, William Baldwin, John Brickell, Stephen Elliott, Zacheus Collins, William Darlington, Henry Muhlenberg, Augustus Oemler, Thomas Nuttall, Constantine Samuel Rafinesque and John Torrey.
