Haversian canals

(or osteonic canals) Tiny canals in bone, containing nerves and blood vessels and surrounded by concentric rings of cells.

In 1694 physician Clopton Havers (1657-1702) published an article in Philosophical Transactions entitled 'An account of an extraordinary haemorrhage at the glandula lacrymalis', in which he described the case of a patient who wept tears of blood.
