The first inkling that there was going to be community opposition to the show came in the days leading up to the event, when we heard that a number of local groups, such as the Land Stewardship Project, Houston County Protectors, Citizens Against Silica Mining, the Ho-Chunk Nation and
Coulee Region Climate Alliance, were organizing to protest the event.
In January 1988, when a "get big or get out" strategy seemed to be the only way for farmers to survive, a handful of farmers gathered in Southwestern Wisconsin's "
coulee region," where glacial valleys have produced unique topography ideal for small-scale agriculture.

The United Way supports around 70 different programs throughout the
Coulee region.
Founded in 1968 to make dimension wood components, Bangor, WI-based
Coulee Region Enterprises has grown from three employees to 100 employees, from 5,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet of production and storage space, and expanded to include a lumber wholesale business.
In 1988, Wayne joined George and a handful of other rural Wisconsin farmers to form
Coulee Region Organic Produce Pool (CROPP), known today as Organic Valley.
The team displayed "an intense commitment" and collegiality in reaching settlement on a three-year contract that runs through 2002, according to
Coulee Region United Educators Director Gerald Roethel.
