Karl Donitz, in signing the surrender to the Allies at Rheims (May 7); Jodl was then tried by the International Military Court at Nuremberg (Nurnberg) and, due to his position as one of Hitler's top advisers and his acquiescene to many illegal schemes, was found guilty on four counts; he was hanged at Nuremberg (October 16, 1946); his case was later reviewed by a German denazification court, which found that he had restricted himself only to military operational matters and had not as such broken any international law; posthumously exonerated by the court (February 28, 1953).
