EOKA

An anti-British Greek Cypriot terrorist group led by Colonel Grivas and designed to obtain independence for Cyprus from direct British rule 1955–59. It staged a coup in 1974 which led to Turkish invasion and forced partition.

AKEL took issue because Grivas, also known by his nom de guerre Dighenis, later led the EOKA B paramilitary organisation, which many blame for the ills suffered by the island.
A successor organisation, EOKA B, undermined the new state, and with the support of the right-wing military junta in Greece, carried out attacks on government targets, left-wingers and Turkish Cypriots.
