The Increasing Diversity and Complexity of Feature Journalism
Short Books was set up in September, 1999, by two former journalists, ex-Observer, Spectator and Sunday Telegraph Rebecca Nicolson and ex-Daily and Sunday Telegraph Aurea Carpenter, with the intention of bridging the gap between publishing and feature journalism. Both found that many of their writers had stories to tell that were too short to make a hardback book and too long for a page feature.
There are some things that public journalism and feature journalism can learn from the West.
In this paper I am particularly interested in exploring the emergence of blogging as a popular part of corporate communications strategy, the lived realities of today's citizen-consumers, the fragmentation of and experimentation with identity common in online communication, the social function of feature journalism, and the essential nature of media as the invisible interlocutor of people's lives.
In this paper I integrate the literature on internet-enabled collective intelligence, remediating and exploring the possibilities of feature journalism online, people's intensifying exchanges and interactions in everyday life online, "interactive" practices of newsgathering, production and dissemination, and the changing role of media in society with the issues of the cultural economies of the contemporary information age, interactivity in online journalism, the technological affordances of media, the structuring role of media in lived experience, and the practice of news gathering as a more collaborative activity.

The literature on the media's impact upon democracy and governance, the social function of feature journalism, the construction of a modern media environment capable of supporting democracy and good governance, the institutional role of the news media, and the developing role of journalists in digital media is relevant to this discussion.
