Three forms of adhesion may be distinguished: (1) loose adhesion involving mucus and permitting simultaneous adhesion and movement along the substratum (e.g., the foot secretions of some mollusks); (2) permanent adhesion involving the secretion of a cement (e.g., the attachment of barnacles on rocks); and (3) temporary adhesion allowing an organism to attach strongly but momentarily to the substratum (Tyler, 1988).
