While in southern Africa he taught in secondary and high schools in Lesotho, the former homelands of Venda and
Gazankulu. He studied with the College of Preceptors in the UK (19861988) and obtained the ACP (1986) and LCP (1988) qualifications respectively.
The study area is Thorndale (31[degrees]28'E; 24[degrees] 39'S), forming part of the former
Gazankulu homeland, located in the savanna biome of the Bushbuckridge region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa [19].
The Reynders Committee (1) in 1980 reported to the Regional Health Organisation for Southern Africa (RHOSA) (members:
Gazankulu, Lebowa, Kangwane, KwaNdebele, QwaQwa, Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda, Ciskei, SWA/Namibia) the difficulties being experienced by the members in recruiting doctors and other health professionals and in keeping them, once recruited.
Deliwe began her midwifery career with studies at the
Gazankulu College of Nursing and McCords Hospital in Durban, and went on to complete a first degree in Nursing Education and Community Health at the University of South Africa, then a Masters in Public and Development Management at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg.
A short while later, legislative assemblies were established in Kwazulu, Ciskei, Lebowa, Venda,
Gazankulu, Bophuthatswana, and QwaQwa.
