The familiar characters include Sigurd the dragon-slayer, Byrnhild the Valkyrie, the iron courage of the brothers Gunnar and Hogni, and their avenging sister Guthrun. It was first written in Iceland about AD 1250, says Crawford, but the earliest manuscript, from about 1400, includes the Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok, a continuation of the story by a different author.
