Now a full-time studio artist, some of Balzer's most recent works reference the strange minor characters in the triptychs of Heironymous Bosch. The Lady and the Owl, for instance, was inspired by the tiny male figure embracing a giant owl in waist-deep water in the centre panel of Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights.
Its imagery can slip in a matter of inches from the pathetic to the noble to the utterly grotesque, from Baron Gros to Ilya Repin to Heironymous Bosch to Goya yet again (another way of describing it would be as a modern equivalent to the survivors of the raft of the Medusa with all of the gore that Gericault recorded in the morgue but could never put on a monumental canvas--which of course makes the heroic nobility of the original impossible to sustain).
Until Cardiff After Dark stops resembling a Heironymous Bosch painting styled by Topshop this isn't going to change.
