(hîr′ə-shē′mə, hĭ-rō′shə-mə) A city of southwest Honshu, Japan, on the Inland Sea west of Osaka. The city was destroyed in World War II when an American airplane dropped the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare (August 6, 1945). The rebuilt city is an important commercial and industrial center.
