(hīd), Douglas 1860-1949. Irish nationalist and writer who founded the Gaelic League (1893) and was the first president of Ireland (1938-1945).

, Edward First Earl of Clarendon. 1609-1674. English politician who was an adviser to Charles I during the English Civil War and Lord Chancellor to Charles II (1658-1667). Threatened with impeachment, he fled to France, where he wrote The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England (printed 1702-1704).
