hydraulic fracturing

n.
The process of extracting oil or natural gas by injecting a mixture of water, sand or gravel, and certain chemicals under high pressure into well holes in dense rock to create fractures that the sand or gravel holds open, allowing the oil or gas to escape. Also called fracking.

The Oil and Gas Authority said: "Operations will remain suspended while the OGA gathers data from this and other recent seismic events and then considers carefully whether or not the hydraulic fracturing operations, mitigations and assumptions set out in the operator's Hydraulic Fracture Plan continue to be appropriate to manage the risk of induced seismicity at the Preston New Road site."
Proppant is a solid material designed to keep hydraulic fracture open during treatment.
Hydraulic fracture propagation on jointed rocks is complex due to the different morphologies and composition of joints.
The borehole 1 or borehole 2 is called the fracturing borehole as it is used for fracturing, while other boreholes are called control boreholes (as illustrated in Figure 11), whose aim is to make the hydraulic fracture easily propagate to the directions of them [33-35].
A series of models were established by the predecessors to investigate the correlation between the hydraulic fracture (HF) and the naturally occurring discontinuities such as natural fracture (NF), joint, fissure, and cleat.
Consolidating old and new material to appeal to both current and future fracturing design engineers, Veatch, Holditch, and King present a basic understanding of hydraulic fracture propagation behavior, of the effects of fracturing on post-treatment oil well production, and of aspects pertinent to fracture treatment design application.
The propped hydraulic fracture induces additional stresses in the surrounding rock.
The Flow Dynamics Suite uses a statistical approach to understanding seismicity and reservoir processes for improved hydraulic fracture efficiencies, and demonstrates a unique potential for outlining production from hydraulic fracturing.
16 December 2015 - Canadian microseismic services and technology provider ESG Solutions has acquired Spectraseis Inc., a company specialised in surface-based seismic technology in hydraulic fracture monitoring and induced seismicity monitoring, the company said.
For a long time, hydraulic fracture geometry in the far well zone is one of the latest leading-edge theories in hydraulic fracturing.
This is a step change in the decades-old challenge of evenly distributing proppant throughout the created hydraulic fracture. The technology, which eliminates the need for certain frac fluid additives, including guar, crosslinkers, and friction reducers, significantly increases hydraulic fracturing efficiency and hydrocarbon production.
Pioneer Natural Resources, which operates the Oooguruk oil field, in 2012 executed "the North Slope's largest hydraulic fracture stimulation" in one of its wells using a Lower 48 completion technique.
