IDC President Simon Cunningham, an industrialist sent in by C and W to head IDC, told a news conference that IDC is drawing near to concluding a deal with DDI Corp.
Simon Cunningham, the 39-year-old chief executive responsible for the British firm's northeast Asian operations, assumed the presidency of IDC with the approval of the IDC board, the company said.
"Fixed-line carriers such as C&W IDC must surrender the right to set retail prices for calls to mobile phones originating from their own fixed networks," the company says.
"The component technology of both handheld devices and mobile phones has now reached a point where embedded imaging is possible," said Chris Chute, senior analyst for IDC's Digital Imaging Solutions and Services research.
Automatic speech recognition (ASR), one of the three speech technologies, will account for 96.2% of the total 2005 revenue, according to IDC. The conversion of text into speech (TTS), another speech technology, will account for 3.1% of total revenue in 2005, while voice recognition (VR) will account for only 0.7%.
"The handset industry has been cursed by its own hyperbole and has failed to deliver what was expected of it," said Weili Su, senior analyst for IDC's Smart Handheld Devices program.
"Although Linux is not yet widely deployed in production environments, we are seeing signs of significant adoption," said Scott McLarnon, study director and group vice president at IDC. "The willingness of an increasing number of decision-makers to look closely at Linux bodes well for its future and suggests increasing challenges for competitive platforms.
"Work-at-home employees and power Internet users sparked demand for cable modems in the residential market," said Amy Harris, program manager with IDC's Broadband Markets and Technologies program.
"The majority of the transition to Windows 2000 is taking place now and will continue for the next 12-18 months," said Al Gillen, manager of IDC's System Software research.
IDC makes microscopic latex beads, or microspheres, a diagnostic item used in clinical and veterinary medicine, agriculture and immunology.
IDC's figures are based on license revenue and related service fees, but exclude services such as training.
